About Unbox the Room
Unbox the Room is a quiet puzzle game built around something very ordinary: moving house and unpacking your stuff. Instead of fighting enemies or chasing a score, you spend your time opening boxes and finding a proper place for everything. The game follows an unnamed woman through eight moves between 1997 and 2018, giving you small glimpses of her life without ever explaining it with dialogue.
A Life Told Through Belongings
There is no narrator telling you what is happening. Her possessions do the talking. School items, hobbies, furniture, personal keepsakes, and everyday objects change as the years pass. You see her grow up, head to college, live with roommates, deal with an unhappy relationship, and eventually settle into a place of her own.
The rooms also change along the way. What starts as a young person's space slowly becomes something more personal and lived-in. Paying attention to those little changes is a big part of what makes the game interesting.
Where Does Everything Go?
Each move starts with cardboard boxes waiting to be emptied. Open one and pull out the items inside, then place them where they make sense. Kitchen things usually belong in the kitchen, bathroom items need a spot near the sink, and other belongings might fit on a shelf, inside a cupboard, or somewhere on the floor.
Some objects need to be turned around before they will fit. If something is in the wrong place, it will flash red when you try to finish the room, giving you a clue to look again.
A Calm Place to Unpack
The pixel-art rooms have a cozy isometric look, while soft sound effects and a relaxing soundtrack keep things peaceful. There are no timers, scores, or game-over screens to worry about.
